Speech & Debate

Mrs. Keren Myers earned her bachelor’s degree in communication studies from Howard Payne University. She went on to complete a master’s degree in human communication from Abilene Christian University, focusing on interpersonal relationships, persuasion, and affinity.

Mrs. Meyers taught at Ranger College for several years in an adjunct capacity before accepting her current position as full-time speech instructor. She divides her teaching time between the campuses in Early and Ranger.

Jeani Vermillion is from West Branch, Michigan and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in theater from Saginaw Valley State University. She previously taught theater classes at Kirtland Community College in Roscommon, Michigan before joining Ranger College as head coach of speech and debate.

Speech Team FAQ

How do I join the speech and debate? 
Stop into the Library and talk to Jeani. Come to a rehearsal on Tuesday or Thursday from 3-5pm in the Fine Arts Building’s Speech and Debate Room. Contact Jeani through email at jvermillion@rangercollege.edu.

Do I have to be a communication major to receive a speech and debate scholarship? 
No. You simply have to agree to the requirements of the scholarship, which generally include the following: 1. Participate in weekly rehearsals; 2. Register as a full-time student (minimum load of 12 semester hours); 3. Maintain a 2.5 overall grade point average (GPA); and 4. Be willing to travel to tournaments with the team for competition.

May I receive a scholarship for more than one semester? 
Yes. Generally, students will receive their scholarship for at least four semesters, providing they fulfill the scholarship requirements.

What other types of financial aid are available at Ranger College? 
Students are encouraged to complete financial aid forms that are available from the Office of Financial Assistance. This office will assist you with other types of financial assistance, some which are based on merit, others which are based on need.
